History of IIM Rohtak

In 1959, Planning Commission of India invited Professor George Robbins of UCLA to help set up an institute of management studies to meet the demand for managers in public sector enterprises. As a result, IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad were established in 1961 and 1962 respectively. To study the performance of these institutions, IIM Review Committees were formed in 1981, 1992 and 2004 and each time these committees recommended setting up of newer IIMs which increased the number of IIMs to seven by 2007.

In 2007, Ministry of Human Resource Development proposed setting up of seven new IIMs as a part of the 11th Five Year Plan. The proposal was also endorsed by National Development Council. 4 IIMs were supposed to be set up in 2009 in the first phase with the rest 3 being set up in 2010 in the second phase. However, because of infrastructural issues, only 2 out of the 4 IIMs could start functioning with Indian Institute of Management Rohtak commencing its classes from June 2010 and IIM Ranchi commencing its classes from July 2010.

Foundation of Indian Institute of Management Rohtak was laid on 16 November 2009, thus becoming the first IIM in North India and the only IIM in National Capital Region. P. Rameshan, the then dean of academic administration at IIM Kozhikode was appointed as the first director of IIM Rohtak with IIM Lucknow serving as the mentor institution for the first three years. Ravi Kant, former Managing Director of Tata Motors, joined as the Chairman of the Institute. An MoU was signed with Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak to serve as the transit campus for the first five years and the first batch started in June 2010 with a strength of 50 students. The Haryana Government provided 200 acres of land for the permanent campus and the foundation stone was laid by the then Minister of HRD, Kapil Sibal.

As the construction was getting delayed, the Haryana government transferred 200 acres of land from the Sunaria village for the construction in 2011. The design of the campus has been assigned to Design Accord. In 2017, Dheeraj Sharma, the newly appointed director of IIM Rohtak announced plans to set up a satellite campus in Gurgaon.

ECIS was started by Dr. Venkatesh Murthy, professor at IIM Rohtak to provide elementary education to ragpickers in Rohtak. The students, hailing from Assam and West Bengal are taught Hindi and other basic concepts so as to make them eligible for admission in government schools. An evening school was started by members of ECIS in the village of Sunaria to teach these ragpickers.

Sparsh organised awareness activities throughout the year such as career counseling, blood donation camps, free medical check ups and cleanliness campaigns in government schools. History of Indian Institute of Management Indore

IIM Indore, which came into existence in 1996, was established as the sixth Indian Institute of Management after IIM Calcutta (1961), IIM Ahmedabad (1961), IIM Bangalore (1973), IIM Lucknow (1984) and IIM Kozhikode (1996)

IIM Indore has been awarded the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation by EFMD, the globally recognized international organization for management development. The EQUIS Accreditation Board voted to confer EQUIS Accreditation on IIM Indore on December 10, 2019. IIM Indore is now the second IIM in the nation to receive triple accreditation, bringing glory to the Institute with a ‘Triple Crown’, i.e. receiving all the three prominent accreditations — Association of MBAs (AMBA, UK); The Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB, USA); and EQUIS, European Union. This combination of accreditations is held by less than one percent of business schools in the world, granted by the largest and most influential business school accreditation agencies. As of March 2019, the ‘Triple Crown’ was received by only 90 business schools globally, out of the 13,000+ schools offering business degree programmes.

In 2011, IIM Indore launched the Five Year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM). It is first of its kind programme in India aimed at attracting students who have passed higher secondary school.

IIM Indore started offering its two-year full-time (residential) Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) at Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) in 2011. It is the first IIM to have started operations outside India. In 2013, IIM Indore shifted its Ras al-Khaimah operations to Dubai. However, in 2014, it shut down its operations in its UAE campus.

The institute also offered its two-year full-time (non-residential) Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) in Mumbai, from 2012 till 2019 Till date, no IIM has had a presence in the financial capital of India (Mumbai). Currently, the Institute also offers Post Graduate Programme in Management for Working Executives (PGPMX) in Mumbai.

Academics of IIM Indore

  • Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), a two-year full-time residential programme equivalent to an MBA.
  • Executive Post-Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), a one-year full-time residential programme equivalent to an MBA.
