Best Online Tools for Website

just-ping.com — Use Just Ping to determine if a particular website is accessible from other countries. Just Ping has monitoring servers across the world including Turkey, Egypt, and China so if the ping results say 100% Packet Loss, most likely the site is inaccessible from that region.

who.is — If you like to know the contact address, email and phone number of the website owner, this free whois lookup service will help. This is a universal lookup service meaning it can simultaneously query the whois database of all popular domain registrars.

whoishostingthis.com — Enter the URL of any website and this online service will show you the name of the company where that website is hosted. This may come handy if you need the contact information of the web hosting provider for writing a DMCA Notice or if you are looking to switch web hosts.

chillingeffects.org — When there’s a copyright-related complaint against a website, a copy of that letter is archived in the Chilling Effects database. Anyone can query this public database to know about all the copyright infringement complaints against a particular website.

myip.ms — MyIP.ms offers a comprehensive report of any website or I.P. Address. You get to know about the hosting provider, the physical location of a website, the IP Address change history of a website and the DNS information. Netcraft also offers similar reports.

reversewhois.com — The reverse whois lookup will help you determine other websites of someone. You can search the whois database by the email address or name of the domain registrant.

builtwith.com — Use BuiltWith to know the technology stack of any website. It helps you figure out the mail service provider of a domain, the advertising partners, the tracking widgets that are installed on a website and whether the site is using any CDN like Amazon S3 or Google Cloud. See example.

ssllabs.com - The certificate diagnostics tool will verify your site’s SSL certificate and ensure that it is correctly installed, trusted and does not show errors to any of your site visitors.

semrush.com — If you wish to analyze your competitor’s website, this is the tool to go with. SEM Rush will help you figure what organic keywords are people using to find a website, what is the site’s traffic and which are the competing websites.

dnsmap.io — When you buy a new domain or switch from one host to another, the DNS records for the domain changes and it may take a while to propagate these changes worldwide. The tool checks the DNS records from various geographic locations and it can check your domain’s A, CNAME, TXT and MX records. whatsmydns.net is also a good alternative.

toolbox.googleapps.com — If email messages, including those sent via Mail Merge, from your domain are not reaching the recipient’s mailbox, use this Google tool to confirm that DMARC, DKIM and SPF records are properly configured for your domain.

browserstack.com - Check your website’s responsive design on multiple desktops, tables, iOS and Android phones running different versions of operating systems.

testmysite.io - A simple site testing tool from Netlify that will measure and rank your site’s loading time from different regions around the world.

developers.google.com — Find the Page Speed score of any website on both desktop and mobile devices. The higher this number, the better. The Google tool also offers suggestions on how the score can be improved.

httparchive.org — The HTTP Archive is a repository of all performance-related metrics for a website. It keeps a record of the size of pages, their average load time and the number of failed requests (missing resources) over time.

Website Monitor - Use this open-source Google Sheets based website monitoring tool to get alerts when your domain goes down or is inaccessible.

Flush DNS - Use this tool to flush the Google DNS cache for a domain. If you changed the DNS servers for your domain, by changing registrars or DNS hosting in the last few days, flush your main domain name first before you flush any subdomains. OpenDNS also has a web tool for refreshing the DNS cache.

DomainTools - The tool monitors one or more web domains and sends email alerts when the domain is expiring, the domain gets renewed, the nameservers change or when the registrant information is updated for the domain.

How To Find Out How Much Actual Traffic a Website Gets

Would you like to know how much traffic (or page views) other websites in your niche are getting for competitive analysis? While it will be difficult for any third-party to accurately measure the traffic of a site, there are a bunch of traffic estimation services that can give you a better understanding of the popularity of a website. Here’s a list:

1. Similar Web - It started as a tool for finding similar sites but now offers a range of data including traffic analysis in a clean interface. You get to know the site’s traffic over time, the countries that are sending the most traffic, what search keywords are bringing the organic referrals, how much time users are spending on a site and so on.

2. SEM Rush - It offers plenty of information around search (organic) traffic for any website. Put in the website URL and you’ll instantly know how the site has fared in organic search over time. The data can be split by country, you get to know which sites are sending traffic and also the keywords that are bringing the most visitors. Open Site Explorer is another popular tool in this category.

3. Alexa - Enter the website’s domain and Alexa will reveal the ranking of that website based on a combined measure of unique visitors and page views. The rank isn’t based on a site’s traffic alone but is relative to the traffic of all other sites that are monitored by Alexa. Webmasters are often skeptical of Alexa number but the rank is still a good indicator of a website’s popularity over time.

4. QuantCast - Like Compete, you can use QuantCast to determine how many people have visited a selected site during a given period from desktop or mobile phone. For sites that have implemented the QuantCast tags, you get more accurate metrics including visitor demographics, traffic by country, and the split in mobile and desktop traffic.

Improving Gmail Malicious Document Detection with Deep Learning

Improving Gmail Malicious Document Detection with Deep Learning

Gmail protects your incoming mail against spam, phishing attempts, and malware. Now Gmail Malicious Document Detection works with the Help of Deep Learning. Gmail existing machine learning models are highly effective at doing this, and in conjunction with our other protections, they help block more than 99.9% of threats from reaching Gmail inboxes.

Gmail Malicious Document Detection - Old Scanner

One of gmail key protections is gmail malware scanner that processes more than 300 billion attachments each week to block harmful content. 63% percent of the malicious documents we block differ from day to day. To stay ahead of this constantly evolving threat, we recently added a new generation of document scanners that rely on deep learning to improve our detection capabilities.

Gmail Malicious Document Detection Using New Scanner and Working with Deep Learning

TensorFlow

Since the new scanner launched at the end of 2019, google increased gmail daily detection coverage of Office documents that contain malicious scripts by 10%. Gmail technology is especially helpful at detecting adversarial, bursty attacks. In these cases, gmail new scanner has improved gmail detection rate by 150%. Under the hood, gmail new scanner uses a distinct TensorFlow deep-learning model trained with TFX (TensorFlow Extended) and a custom document analyzer for each file type. The document analyzers are responsible for parsing the document, identifying common attack patterns, extracting macros, deobfuscating content, and performing feature extraction.

Strengthening gmail document detection capabilities is one of gmail key focus areas, as malicious documents represent 58% of the malware targeting Gmail users. Gmail are still actively developing this technology, and right now, gmail only use it to scan Office documents.

Gmail new scanner runs in parallel with existing detection capabilities, all of which contribute to the final verdict of gmail decision engine to block a malicious document. Combining different scanners is one of the cornerstones of our defense-in-depth approach to help protect users and ensure our detection system is resilient to adversarial attacks.
Gmail will continue to actively expand the use of artificial intelligence to protect gmail users’ inboxes, and to stay ahead of attacks.

Top reasons to choose Facebook over Google

It's been 12 years since Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook out of his Harvard dorm room, and the company has come a long way since then.
For the past four years, Facebook has overtaken Google as the best place to work in the US on Business Insider's annual list. Google currently sits at No. 2

While both tech giants are considered to be great companies to work for, Facebook edges out Google in a number of head-to-head comparisons.

1. Facebook employee are happier

Employees from both tech companies are pretty happy to be there, but Facebook has the edge over Google with a satisfaction rating of 93% compared to Google's rating of 84%, according to employees who completed PayScale's survey.

2. They get more freedom

There are a lot of contributing factors to this high level of happiness, but one important reason stands out: Facebook trusts its people.

Don Faul, a former Facebook executive, recently told The Wall Street Journal that, compared to Google, which he says is more structured and places more importance on "manager" titles, Facebook employees are often placed in roles that cater to their strengths and are encouraged to question and criticize their managers.

And this kind of freedom is perhaps one of the best drivers for employee engagement.

"You get zero credit for your title," he said. "It's all about the quality of the work, the power of your conviction, and the ability to influence people."

3. They make more money

We know money isn't everything when it comes to job satisfaction — but it certainly helps. In fact, while a higher salary won't necessarily boost your happiness, researchers from the University of British Columbia and Michigan State University found that people with higher incomes reported feeling less sad, something Facebook employees surely know well.

On average an experienced employee at Facebook makes $135,000 compared to $133,000 at Google. And the social-media company typically pays 17% above market rates for its employees, while Google pays 10% above market.

Taking a closer look, according to data gathered by Glassdoor, an intern at Facebook makes almost $7,400 a month on average, while a Google intern makes closer to $7,200 a month.

4. They're less stressed

If you're in the market for a stress-free job, you'd be better off avoiding the tech industry altogether. But while it's unlikely for many techies to consider their jobs relaxing, more Facebook employees report low job-stress levels than any other tech company, including Google.

Despite stressors like product launches and "on-call duty," a two-week period a few times a year when engineers are responsible for keeping Facebook's service up and running around the clock, 11% of Facebook employees consider their jobs low-stress. Meanwhile, 9% of Google employees feel the same way.

5. They consider their work more meaningful

"Does your work make the world a better place?" That's what PayScale asked Facebook and Google employees, and 81% of Facebook employees answered with a resounding yes. At Google, on the other hand, 67% of employees feel their work gives them meaning.

A former Googler cited one possible explanation on Quora: too many overqualified people.

"It can be tough to feel a sense of accomplishment about what you do, and that sense is actually quite important to the type of people who are ambitious enough to get over the Google hiring bar," they said.

6. The hiring process is less difficult

The hiring process is less difficult.Hiring at Google takes an average of six weeks, and job candidates consistently rate on Glassdoor Google's interview process as more difficult than Facebook's.

While it may seem counterintuitive that more competitive hiring practices could work against Google, an ex-employee explains that the tech giant has its pick of the best and brightest candidates and often hires them for lower-level jobs.

"There are students from top 10 colleges who are providing tech support for Google's ad products, or manually taking down flagged content from YouTube, or writing basic code to A|B test the color of a button on a site," the ex-employee says.

7. A smaller team means more room for growth

Another former Google employee says that Google is too big for most of the company's 53,000 employees to have a real impact. Facebook, however, employs a much smaller team of about 10,000.

"Unless you are an amazingly talented engineer who gets to create something new, chances are you're simply a guy/girl with an oil can greasing the cogs of that machine," the former Google employee says.

And when it comes to moving up the ladder, Facebook employees report to Glassdoor that they have greater opportunities for growth. Compared to Googlers who feel satisfied in their ability to move up, Facebookers report that they are very satisfied with the career opportunities at Facebook.

8. They love the generous benefits, especially for parents

Mark Zukerberg
Mark Zukerberg - Facebook Founder

Facebook and Google have great perks — free food, a vibrant office environment, easy transportation to and from work — but Facebook trumps Google in the parenthood department.

Facebook is one of the first companies to offer coverage of up to $20,000 for egg-freezing, it provides $4,000 in "Baby Cash" to employees with a newborn, and its employees love that they can enjoy parenthood on their terms, giving the tech company's maternity and paternity leave policies an almost perfect score on Glassdoor.

Current employees are particularly excited to report that Facebook makes its four-months-paid-leave policy available to women and men, whereas Google offers 18 weeks of paid maternity leave but 12 weeks of paternity leave.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg cemented Facebook's status as a compelling case study for how to make parental-leave policies work last year when he took two months off to be with his newborn. Experts agree that taking parental leave from the top is key to seeing it trickle down.

And overall, Facebookers report on Glassdoor being happier with their benefits than Googlers.

"There is literally nothing bad about it — the perks and benefits are incredibly generous, and only get more so over time," writes a current employee in Menlo Park, California.

Facebook vs Google: which Ads is Best

Facebook Ads and Google Ads are the two top pay-per-click advertising platforms. Google Ads target specific keywords and appear as the top results in Google searches, whereas Facebook Ads display in social feeds and are targeted using demographic and behavioral information. Each platform is used to do anything from build brand awareness to drive sales.

Facebook Ads and Google Ads each have different levels of usability. While Facebook is a more visual interface, Google Ads is a more data-focused interface. Most find it easy to use Facebook’s basic features, but struggle to learn its more advanced functionality. Google, on the other hand, is harder to learn at the beginning, but once a user acclimates, the entire platform is simple to manage.

Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads cost almost a dollar less than Google Ads. The platform also offers comprehensive audience targeting options. This makes it a great choice for advertisers with limited budgets needing to build brand awareness.

Facebook, a social media and networking platform with 2.3 billion users worldwide, offers businesses the ability to advertise with pay-per-click (PPC) ads. These ads are created using the robust Facebook Ad Manager platform, and are then are displayed to a targeted audience defined by user demographics, interests, behavior, and Facebook engagement patterns. As part of the ad creation process, businesses select an ad budget, ad placement, and ad run time.

Facebook’s audience targeting is what really sets it apart from Google Ads. Since Facebook users aren’t on social media actively looking for a product or service, the platform encourages conversions by giving advertisers comprehensive targeting options—including factors like age, gender, income, and interests—that align closely with ad content. This is what makes Facebook marketing and Facebook advertising effective, despite the audience lacking the same level of intent as Google Ads.

Actual ad creation within Facebook is relatively easy. As mentioned, ads are built using the user-friendly Facebook Ads Manager. To build ads, click the “Create” button on your account dashboard, then choose your ad format, select your audience, edit ad settings, and create ad copy and images. Get step-by-step instructions on how to create a Facebook ad.

When to Use Facebook Ads: Facebook Ads are best for businesses seeking to increase awareness of their products or brands—especially among audiences that may not have heard of them before. With extensive audience targeting options, Facebook allows advertisers to quickly and concisely introduce themselves to their target audience via text, image, and compelling video ads.

Google Ads

One of the best things about Google AdWords is that the results are pretty much instant. As soon as your campaign has been approved, you can start receiving traffic in a matter of minutes. Simply enter the keywords you want to target, enter a maximum bid, and you’re good to go. Then you just sit back and watch all the traffic flow to your website. This means you can start getting sales on the same day you start your campaign. With results taking mere minutes, you’ll wonder why you ever spent money on anything else.

If you’re looking for a scalable marketing strategy, then Google AdWords is the perfect solution. With millions of keywords available to bid on and new ones every single day, you almost have an unlimited audience to target. With so many keywords to take advantage of, you can keep adding new keywords to your campaign to increase your traffic.

Google AdWords  has an amazing array of analytics and charts built into its software. These stats allow users to see how well their campaigns are performing and if they should be making changes. The statistics cover everything from the average cost per click, to advert position and even conversion rate.

By having all of these analytics at your fingertips, it can help you make decisions on where to spend your money. If you currently have a very high converting keyword then it’s probably best to increase your spend for that keyword.

You could always try and start a new campaign with new keywords, but if you already have the statistics saying your campaign is successful, why bother? Just increase the daily spend of your current campaign, and you’ll move up on the ad position, which in turn will give you more traffic. With so much AdWords data available you will easily be able to provide evidence as to if Google AdWords is worth it or not. That’s perfect for showing to any upper management or worried accountants.

Stop AdWords Anytime: One of the other benefits of Google AdWords and PPC, in general, is that if your campaign isn’t profitable, then you can stop it at any time. Other marketing techniques such as SEO and print marketing often require businesses to commit for several months. This means if you sign a 6 months SEO contract and don’t see any improvements after 3 months, you’ll still have to continue paying. For some businesses, this can end up being a huge waste of money.

With Google AdWords however, you can stop a campaign in a matter of seconds and even pause them if you want to enable them later. This gives you a lot of flexibility and the ability to control your finances even better. This means no contracts, no fixed terms, and no wasting money.

Top Benefits of Google AdWords

  1. Adwords works faster than SEO.
  2. Increase brand awareness.
  3. Reach more customers through their Gmail Inbox.
  4. Reconnect with visitors of your website.
  5. Measure your performance consistently.
  6. Explore more using your ads.
  7. Tackle your competition better.

When to Use Google Ads: Google Ads are best for businesses with a product or service that users know they need and are actively searching for. These ads primarily target users in the buying phase, so ad copy that is concise, unambiguous, and highlights the clear advantages of a product/service will be the most successful.

Google’s AI model can predict lung cancer

Google's new research, initiated in 2017, involves an AI model that can predict lung cancer and boost survival rates, with a 94.4 percent success rate.

The study used advances in 3D volumetric modelling alongside datasets from its partners. The AI-powered model uses a current CT scan and if possible, a previous CT scan, as input for each patient. Based on this, the model provides an overall malignancy prediction, which can help in increasing the survival rate because medical treatment can be more successful when the cancer is caught early.

Explaining the research process, the company said,

We created a model that can not only generate the overall lung cancer malignancy prediction (viewed in 3D volume) but also identify subtle malignant tissue in the lungs (lung nodules). The model can also factor in information from previous scans, useful in predicting lung cancer risk because the growth rate of suspicious lung nodules can be indicative of malignancy.”

In contrast, the process followed by radiologists is a little tedious. They look through hundreds of 2D images of a single CT scan where cancer is minuscule and can be easily missed. Google claimed its AI model has worked better than six radiologists, detecting five percent more cases.

Despite the progress made in lung cancer prediction so far, Google confirmed that further studies will be carried out to assess the impact and utility in clinical practice. At present, the company is in early conversations with partners around the world to continue further clinical validation research and deployment.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), lung cancer results in over 1.7 million deaths per year, more than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined, making it the sixth most common cause of death globally.

Job Security is an illusion – Practical Implication

In my final year in University, one lecturer advised me that if I want to have a good future in the job market, I should make sure that I am irreplaceable. The thing is, I am not there yet, but to be frank, I do not even think it is possible. In my opinion, everyone is replaceable. What I would tell my younger self is sharpen your skills, but more so, learn more than one skill so that if one doesn’t work out you have something else to fall back on. One may argue that having multiple skills makes you a “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

Unfortunately, I think we are approaching an era where having just one skill might be a huge risk to your source of livelihood. It is important to have options, even if you never have to put them into use.

Corporate has two types of working people:

Those focused on their ambition and those that seek security (as their dominant focus). At times the two blur depending on what you see in front of you, but broadly this is true.

Then if we cut each of those groups down, there are two subsets of each group; in the security focused group, there is a set that focus on “doing their job” and the other set that focus on doing a “great” job. Equally there is a similar breakdown in the ambitious set; those that create enough value in their roles to progress closer to their goals, and those that think they are.

Within these groups, who is truly secure?

The buzz words of today filter across almost every business I work with; transformation; cost reduction; rationalization; restructure; redundancy; new management; offshoring; outsourcing… The list goes on.

Each form of change brings and upside and a down side, depending on the perspective you hold. For example, some will see the upside being cost saving and efficiency, with the downside being time and funds invested to deliver the change. Others see the upside a little thinner, perhaps taking the experience of observing such a change as “new”, while seeing the downside as potentially losing their job in the end.

Of course, no matter where you are positioned within an organisation, your role will face scrutiny in line with a business’ life-cycle and changing market dynamics impacting the business. At times, your role will be crucial in the eyes of leadership. At other times, the contribution of your role to business performance may be challenged. In any case your value to the business is defined by the performance and output it requires to provide to stakeholders at any given time. As the world around your business changes, so will the requirements of your role. Here lies the illusion of job security.

Your job will change . It will never be the same over a long period of time. As such, you must change over time. To be in control of the change, you can position your career in a secure way, but it is impossible to hold a “secure job” for a long period of time.

When we think about security, it is best to think of “career security” not “job security”, as no job is secure. Career security is best developed by proactively managing four key areas; Clarity, Networks, Influence and High Performance.

Unfortunately, playing a defensive game in your career is fraught with danger. This is not to say you can’t sustain periods where you just “do your job”, but this will not last for long. I can guarantee, your role will change.

This is an era of rapid technological advancement, migration will change the dynamics of the job market whether we close the borders or not. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already causing panic especially amongst those whose task revolve around administration and data processing. However, according to Mckinsey & Company Report 2017, only 5% of current occupations are at the risk of being fully automated, but things might change.

Let’s forget about this technological stuff for a moment; Companies shut down, organizations fail, business owners wake up in the morning and decide that the path they had taken is just not for them anymore and they close their businesses, they certainly have the right to do so.

Businesses exist to make profits first before anything else, we are talking about for-profit companies and organizations. In an ideal world, companies would value their employees and treat them as humans first. Unfortunately, we are not there yet. We have to work with what we have and where we are.

So, Now What?

This is an era of rapid social, political, and technological disruption. To survive it, we have to be adaptable, we have to accept that continuous learning is our new way of living.

The illiterate of the future are not those who can’t read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.

Putting yourself in the employer’s shoes will help you in making difficult decisions when it comes to sticking to a job versus taking risks and investing in your future.

We cannot control outside forces, but we have the power to influence how we want to make a living when we are still in this world. We can do this by being intentional in where we invest our money, time, and energy. It is important to create options for yourself before disaster strikes. “Options” is the key word here.

"The good thing is that, with all these new changes, new opportunities are arising. An article published by World Economic Forum states that: Ten years ago, jobs like App developers, YouTube content creators, Driverless-car engineers, Drone operators, Uber drivers, Social media managers, Cloud computing specialists, Millennial generational experts did not exist."

Who knows what the next 10 years will bring?

All we can do is learn to be adaptable.

The new norm will be learning, unlearning, and relearning.
