How to Start Own E-Commerce Business

How to Start Own E-Commerce Business

The eCommerce industry is ushering in the next wave of change for the Indian economy and if you’ve been thinking about venturing a foot into its world of infinite profits, then the clock is ticking...the time is ripe to start your own eCommerce business in India.

Bill Gates once said: “If your business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business.”

Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, ShopClues all showed us that eCommerce truly is the future. And the only way they became as big as they did was because they realized and experimented with the brimming potential of the eCommerce market.

“We were not thinking about numbers then, but we knew something big can be built out of ecommerce,” Binny and Sachin Bansal, co-founders of Flipkart, had once said.

Still not convinced? Let’s take a look at the numbers to make a stronger case.

According to the Economic Survey of 2017-2018, the ecommerce market in India was estimated at the $33 billion - a full 19.1 percent growth rate since 2016-2017!

eCommerce Business Industry evaluation 2027

What’s more, the Nasscom Strategic Review of 2018 estimated the ecommerce market at $33 billion in 2017-2018 and claimed that it reached $38.5 billion, indicating a commendable growth rate of about 17 percent in the financial year 2018-2019, The Business Standard reported.

These numbers are the encouragement you need to start your own ecommerce business in India. Keep at it, and who knows? Maybe you could build the next ‘Alibaba’.

After all, as Jack Ma puts it - all it takes to create a successful eCommerce business - is a great vision.

“My dream was to set up my own eCommerce company. In 1999, I gathered 18 people in my apartment and spoke to them for two hours about my vision. Everyone put their money on the table, and that got us $60,000 to start Alibaba. I wanted to have a global company, so I chose a global name,” he said.

So, are you ready? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to start your own eCommerce business in India.

eCommeerce Business Quotes for Shopping

Step 1: Decide on the perfect business plan and model for your eCommerce Business

The first thing you have to do is to think long and hard about narrowing down on the perfect eCommerce business plan and eCommerce business model.

Like Tobias Lutke says:

“E commerce is not an industry; eCommerce is a tactic.”

There are two types of business models that you can opt for. You can go with either a single vendor or a multi-vendor eCommerce store.

To this end, you can choose either a single product line or have multiple product lines based on the budget you have set for yourself for your eCommerce business.

Single-vendor marketplace eCommerce Business

The advantage of going for this type of an eCommerce business model is that it only involves two entities - a single seller who is selling his or her product to multiple customers.

To this end, it is not only easier to keep track of the transactions between the two entities, administrative costs are lower when you have to pay just one supplier, and you also have more control over the inventory at hand.

Multi-vendor marketplace eCommerce Business

This kind of model calls for multiple vendors to sell their products to multiple customers, with the vendors all being required to be registered with your site.

The advantages of following this kind of an eCommerce business model is that it gives you security in terms of making a sale - for instance, if one of your suppliers is unavailable to sell his or her products for whatever reason, you have others to fall back on. This not only helps you deal with demand fluctuations but also helps prevent a disruption in the supply process.

It is important to note here, that within this as well, you can choose to either sell a unique product yourself - either through your own online business or a similar platform or can choose to allow other sellers sell their products on your store. In the first situation, you could earn high margins.

In the second, you will earn a commission, every time one of the sellers registered with your brand makes a successful sale.

Step 2: Brand your brand

Once you’ve decided on which business model you wish to follow in order to build your eCommerce business and have narrowed down on the product or products you wish to sell, as well as the target audience you wish to sell to - the next step is to come up with the perfect name for your brand.

eCommerece Business Quotes By Jack Ma

Now, you may be thinking - “What’s in a name?”

Your brand name should be:

  1. Short and easy to remember
  2. Reflective of your brand
  3. Unique and usually not have another meaning in another language

Along with this, you should also come up with a finalized design for your company logo.

Once you have decided on a name for your brand and its logo, the next step is in forming your company.

In India, there are usually four popular kinds of companies:

  1. Sole proprietorship (no limitation of liability)
  2. One-person company
  3. Limited liability partnership (LLP)
  4. Private limited company

The kind of formation you wish to go with is, of course, depending on whether you wish to run the company independently, or want to bring in more partners. This is important because if you’ve opted for a corporate or partnership-based structure, then you are expected to file tax returns and have a tax ID number. Online businesses of this model require an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to open a business bank account so that business taxes can be filed in the next financial year. EIN is a unique number that identifies your business.

If you have, however, opted for the sole proprietor model, then you need not have a tax ID number. You can use your allotted Social Security number instead.

Step 3: Register your eCommerce Business

Now comes one of the most crucial parts of starting your eCommerce business in India - registering and completing all the legal formalities for the same.

  • Apply for the Director’s Identification Number (DIN), which can be downloaded using the DIN application (DIN 3 form) from the official website of Ministry of Corporate Affairs. You can also apply DIN online, by just attaching and uploading the necessary documents.

  • Make sure you have your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Digital Signature Certificate.

  • Once you have received the DIN, you can apply to the Registrar of Companies (ROC), to check for the availability of the name you have chosen for your company. This can also be done by checking for it on the official website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

  • After receiving a confirmation on the name, you can incorporate the proposed company within six months. You also have the option of renewing the name of the company, by paying a certain fee.

  • Apply for the Goods and Service Tax (GST) certification, Shops and Establishment Licence - necessary in cases of Payment Gateway Integration - and Professional Tax (PT).

  • Apply to open up a Provident Fund (PF) with the respective Provident Fund Organization; register with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation for medical insurance of the employees and finally apply for the Certification of Company’s Incorporation, where your company will be officially registered under the Company’s Act, 2013.

Step 4: Opening a bank account for your eCommerce Business

Once your company is officially registered under the Act, you will need to open up a bank account for the same. The account can be opened with any bank but has to be opened in the official name of the company.

If you have chosen the proprietorship model for your online business, you need to obtain GST registration, which will then allow you to open up a bank account in the name of your online business.

In this case, once your bank account is ready, you can list the products you will sell on your eCommerce website, to obtain and then operate a payment gateway.

Step 5: Build your eCommerce website

While setting up your website, you could either choose a pre-built platform or make it from scratch. Both have distinct advantages, though building a website from scratch is usually the more favoured option.

Using a pre-built platform

The advantage of using a pre-built platform like WordPress and Wix is that they offer you ready made templates - designed according to the kind of online business you wish to run.

For instance, if your online business is to do with fashion, then the template will be one which is colorful, has appropriate space for a lot of visual content, including a page to place shipping orders.

You will not have to waste time and resources on building this website from scratch, rather you can just play around with the ready-made template to make it more apt for the design you had in mind, and add in all the information.

Building a website from scratch:

However, many often vouch for the custom-made platform option, since you can visualize and design your whole website - exactly the way you’d imagined it in your mind.

WooCommerce, Magento, Shopify, Zepo and KartRocket are some of the favoured options for those looking to create websites for their ecommerce business.

Now, you have to keep in mind that it is your website which represents your whole brand visually - the frontrunner to the entire online business. Hence, no amount of detail is too little - from the colour to the font and images - everything should tell a small part of the story to your brand.

As author Paul Cookson put it: “Websites promote you 24/7...No employee will do that.”

To this end, there are a few things you need to consider while launching your company’s official website:

You need to decide whether you wish to self-host it or hire a professional to oversee and run it, on a daily basis.

You need to make sure that multiple posts - be it details about the services your eCommerce business offers or plain pictures of your products - is uploaded and shared on your website, every day.

Step 6: Payment gateways for your eCommerce Business Website

You need to set up payment gateways for your online business to become profitable, as it will allow the processing of credit cards, debit cards, net banking, and cash card transactions through the ecommerce website.

In order to be granted a payment gateway for your ecommerce business, you need to submit the following documents:

  • Bank account in the name of the business PAN card of the business
  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Memorandum of Association
  • Articles of Association
  • Identity proof
  • Address proof
  • Website terms of use Website privacy policy

Once you have submitted all these documents, you will be provided with a payment gateway for your online business, using which you can enable your online payments.

Some of the popular payment gateways are PayPal, PayU and RazorPay.

Step 7: Logistics

This step is essential to carrying out a successful eCommerce business in India. Logistics refers to the process of shipping an order to a customer or transporting an inventory to a merchant. This process also keeps track of the shipped goods which are in transit, until they are delivered to the customer in question.

To this end, logistics management involves the practice of locating and identifying distributor companies, to collaborate with. Most owners of ecommerce businesses prefer to outsource their logistics to a third-party company working in transport and storage.

Figuring out the logistics is crucial for your eCommerce business since it means that you now have an effective and steady-fast way to keep track of the products being delivered- at every step. This will help in preventing products from going missing and help you respond to customer queries regarding the expected delivery, successfully.

Here’s explaining the logistics process further. Once a customer completes his or her order on your website, you will be sent a notification through the help of inventory software (which most eCommerce businesses use). Once the notification is confirmed, then you need to ship the product in question.

To this end, you can tie up with a third party company that deals in supply and distribution, so that when a customer makes a purchase, the third party will also be automatically notified and they can send the package out quickly. This is the more organised process, but usually applicable for when your online business becomes slightly bigger and you gather enough resources to tie-up with a distribution company in the first place.

However, if your company is smaller – for example, if you're running your website from your home or a separate office and store inventory there, you just need to package the product in question and send it to the buyer directly. This will save you the extra cost of having to outsource your delivery process to a third party.

Step 8: How to attract customers to your website

As Joel Anderson, the former CEO of Walmart once said:

eCommerece Business Quotes

SEO marketing:

Search engine optimisation (SEO) marketing strategy is the way of the world currently and will continue to rule the future of smart marketing.

Grabbing the attention of potential online customers is paramount for the success of your ecommerce business. This is where SEO strategies come in. SEO helps put you on the search engine map. And with 44 percent of online shoppers beginning their search with a search engine, you need to be on their radar.

Picking the right keywords

According to reports, about 700,000 Google searches are performed in the span of one minute. To make sure that you show up in these searches, you need to come up with a targeted keyword list. There are different kinds of keywords that you need to use to make your online business show up in the search engines. One kind are the keywords that are between 0-26 characters, usually called ‘head terms’. The other, are those that are between 26-40 characters, which are usually more specific.

Tools like Google Keyword Planner, Google AutoSuggest, Keywordtool.io, Keyword Dominator and SEMrush will help you track down on keywords that will help your content show up the most on search engine platforms.

Advertisements

Advertisements are another route you need to go to grab the customer eyeball. You can opt for the ‘paid ad’ option on platforms like Facebook and Instagram and pay a certain amount of money, for these platforms to promote your advertisement on users’ daily feeds. Once these users click on the ad and are directed to your website, it is your job to convert them into a potential customer.

Promotions:

While this isn’t the most practical thing to offer at the initial stages of starting your eCommerce business, sales and promotions sell like hot cakes with online customers in India. You could publicize posts and bulletins regarding these sales, on social media.

Retargeting

Re-targeting is a process where a cookie is placed on the computers of those who have visited your site once but have exited without purchasing anything. Once the cookie is placed and when these online users visit another website that shows advertisements from the retargeting network, your ad will then be shown to them. While this is an expensive route to undertake, it usually brings in positive results.

Word of mouth

If you don’t have that many resources to invest in expensive routes like advertising, when you’re starting out, then you can always turn to the oldest practice of making sure that business is being spoken about - word of mouth.

eCommerce Business Quotes By Jeff

Ask your customers to recommend your brand to their friends and families. You could also tie-up with professional bloggers and ask them to write and review your brand so that their reviews can secure more traction to your website.

There are several other similar routes you can try as well, and with the constantly changing nature of the Indian ecommerce market and the rising dominance of social media - you will always find a way to communicate with potential customers - who are the make-or-break deciding factors to your online business.

To sum up, starting an ecommerce business in India, especially right now, is a great idea, considering that the market for it is blooming. But a word of caution - brace yourself for it isn’t going to be all rainbows and butterflies.

You may face hurdles when it comes to trying to register and legalize your online business. And once you fight that and do get the business recognized, you will face a fair share of competition, from people like you who are looking to become the next Jeff Bezos. But, you don’t need to be Jeff Bezos. All you need is your own vision, a near-foolproof plan on how to execute this vision, and the patience and discipline to see it through till the end.

The ecommerce world in India is your well of infinite possibilities at this moment. So, jump right in.

Tips for Starting a Small Business

The cost of starting your own business varies greatly depending on a number of factors:

  • The field in which you want to venture
  • How big you want to start
  • The legalities involved in starting the business
  • What type of business it will be (whether you need overheads)

Things like your projected capital expenditure are all factors that should be considered when writing your business plan. However, before you even go into all this, you need to ask yourself one thing: are you driven enough to see it through?

One of the main reasons why most businesses fail, especially online businesses such as affiliate marketing, is because the entrepreneur went into a field that he/she had absolutely no passion for nor cared to learn enough to make their venture successful.

This brings us to another set of factors that must be considered when starting a business, especially if you want to give yourself the best chance of success. Ideally, the best business ideas often have a balanced combination of these three things:

  1. They are something the entrepreneur likes doing (passion)
  2. They are something that the entrepreneur is good at doing (expertise)
  3. The idea is in demand (without the actual demand in the market your business idea will be going nowhere fast) (demand)

If you can find something that combines all these three factors, then you have a viable business idea worth exploring.

Top 15 Best Business Ideas

Many of the best business ideas mentioned here are completely home-based and typically do not require that much capital to start.

The trick will be finding your customers, keeping them, and making them happy with your services enough to justify the kind of price you would ask. That being said, here are some simple business models you should consider:

1. Sell Your Crafts Online

There are platforms such as Shopify and Etsy that allow you to sell anything you want online. If you are good at creating things such as sweaters, clothes, or art, then you can host them on Etsy and advertise them for people to buy online. On Shopify, you can literally build a digital storefront where you can sell a wide variety of wares.

The idea is to find something that people like buying, find out where those people hang out online and redirect that traffic to your digital store. It takes quite a bit of work, but it is worthwhile. You will have to:

  • Create high-quality products
  • Create high-quality content to lure the traffic
  • Deliver on your sales to get great reviews

After that, you rinse, repeat, and scale up your business as you see fit. This is one of the my favorite best business ideas from list of best business ideas.

2. Professional Blogging

Technically speaking, about 1,000 websites are created every minute and hosted online. While that may seem like a huge number, the truth of the matter is that most of these websites do not offer the kind of value that readers like and want to be associated with.

Only a handful of the blogs online today give readers the kind of evergreen content that they keep coming back to; content that binds them to that blog and makes them lifelong readers and customers.

This opens potential business opportunities for those who have a flair for words. Starting a blog and monetizing it is one way to make a living online. The earning potential here is immense.

Here is a list of some of the highest earning indian blogger online:

Bigger, more popular blogs like the Huffington Post earn more than $14,000,000 a month. $14 Million a month! If that is not madness, we don’t know what is! The point is, starting a blogging business is – big business. Potentially. This is also a best business ideas from my best business ideas list.

You will need to set yourself apart though if you want to succeed. Some of the things you will need to do include:

    • Creating an attractive and easy to navigate website, to begin with
    • Offering evergreen, current, and relevant content
    • Finding a niche that gets a lot of traffic
    • Using the right keywords that will help drive traffic to your website
  • Monetizing the blog through avenues such as Google Ads or selling your own merchandise on it
  • Finding ways to engage and grow your audience.

Yes, it is incredibly taxing work to start, but once you get going and start making money, the growth can be exponential. It could take years for your blog to become profitable, but with consistency and high-quality content, it WILL be profitable.

3. Get into Affiliate Marketing

Have you ever wondered how companies such as eBay and Amazon make their money? Yes, they sell things online but how do they get their traffic? They use affiliate marketers.

Affiliate marketing is the art of harnessing online traffic and redirecting towards a certain platform or product and making a commission every time someone buys that product or from that platform using your affiliate link.

It is very much like being a digital salesman, only you do not have to get horrid body aches as you walk from door to door. Imagine the kind of potential for income this business has. Platforms such as Amazon offer up to 10% commission on every item purchased using your affiliate link. Other platforms and vendors offer higher commissions, some even going as high as 50% – 60% or more.

It is estimated that the affiliate marketing industry will grow to around $6.8 billion in the next half-decade. There is a lot of money to be made out there, and all you have to do is find a way to redirect traffic. Some of the most successful affiliate marketing websites include platforms such as “This is why I’m Broke” which makes about $50,000 worth of commission every single month.

The good thing about this is that starting a blog isn’t that expensive. In fact, there are platforms such as Wix that allow you to build a website for free and very quickly. Of course, if you want to go professional, which is advisable, you are going to have to pay a designer and content creators who could increase your overhead expenditure a bit.

All in all, you could start a blog today and get well underway to making money passively in the future. This is also a best business ideas from my best business ideas list.

4. Become an SEO Expert

As an SEO expert (Search Engine Optimization), your primary job will be to help websites rank higher on search engine results pages. SEO is one of the most critical factors that affect web traffic. To reiterate just how important this is, studies have shown that falling below position 5 on Google’s first page removes about 75% of all the potential traffic your website might have got had it been higher. In fact, being the number one link on Google’s first page gives your website a third of all the potential traffic directed towards your specific keywords on Google.

That is millions and millions of potential clicks lost just because websites have not hired an SEO expert. Most webmasters know this, and some try to carry out SEO on their own. But to be honest, the kind of patience and technicalities involved with proper search engine optimization is either beyond most people or requires too much work and time. That’s where you come in.

As an SEO expert, some of your duties will include, but won’t be limited to:

  • Researching high-traffic keywords for your clients
  • Keeping up to date with Google updates
  • Making sense of Google Analytics to your client’s advantage
  • Analyzing and editing web content for your clients
  • Keeping atop of industry trends as well as best practices

To start this kind of business, you will not need that much money. In fact, all you would need to do is create a website that advertises your business. Your website needs to be professionally done if anyone is to take you seriously. It also needs to rank well on Google because you cannot say that you will help them rank highly while your own website is languishing in the dark corners of the internet. You will also need to actually know a thing or two about SEO.

5. Internet Research

This line of work applies to those who are interested in learning new and diverse things online. However, to make money as an internet research assistant, you need to carve out a highly specific niche – one that is willing to pay you to find out information that cannot be easily found by a simple Google search. Notable examples of the kind of services you could offer include things like:

  • Academic research for students, scholars, and other academics. In fact, college students pay handsomely to have expert researchers help them out with their school term papers.
  • Data research for scientists, novelists, bloggers and even businesses such as NGOs.
  • Market research for people who want to start a business or even already established businesses that want to launch a product or break into a certain market.
  • Industry research for novelists, television, and movies.
  • Competitor research analysis for start-ups, small businesses, and huge corporations.

Some people will be more than willing to pay you to find out everything about them online. This is particularly true if they are interested in cleaning up their brand image because they either want to run for public office or are quickly becoming a prominent member of the society.

It is just a matter of finding what people are willing to pay for, finding where they go online to find those services, and offering them your research skills for a fee.

6. Real Estate and House Flipping

Investing in Real Estate has been a wildly popular pursuit for millions of individuals across the nation. The semi-recent housing crisis of 2008 resulted in innumerable properties for sale at pennies on the dollar. Small business entrepreneurs and a plethora of savvy individuals snapped up these low-cost properties and effortlessly flipped them for a sizeable profit.

While the national housing crisis has been over for quite some time, real estate investing remains just as prevalent as it has in years past. Investors quit their day jobs and have taken to creating small business enterprises that focus on the procurement of cheap properties with flipping potential that can result in incredible profits.

If you have the cash flow to invest in a low-priced property that may need a little work, you can easily flip the home to make a handsome profit on your investment, thus turning the effort into a full-fledged business that you increasingly become more adept at.

7. Computer Repair Services

If you have IT and computer experience and are familiar with concepts such as photo editing, word processing, spreadsheets, securities software, and the setting up of home networks, starting a computer repair service might be the ideal gig for you.

8. Storage and Warehousing

Warehousing businesses and storage companies are highly profitable business endeavors that merely require the availability of space and an ability to rent that space.

There is an immense population of people and companies who need to safely store equipment, tools, and personal belongings and who will happily pay a premium to guarantee an available space that is under surveillance and secure against inclement weather.

9. Personal Training Services

Personal training services have surged in popularity in recent years. With increasing numbers of people looking for expert guidance on how to lose fat, build muscle, and become more defined, fitness trainers have enjoyed being part of an industry that continues to grow.

From one-on-one services to group sessions, personal trainers offer services to clientele at a variety of price points that are accessible for many budgets.

The overall success of a personal trainer often relies on their degree of expertise and their ability to produce real, tangible results. Profits and growth of any fitness training enterprise are due in large part to word-of-mouth business, or referrals, and producing exceptional and appreciable results operates in tandem with a rise in referrals-based business.

10. Internet Technology (IT) Support

Internet Technology support services remain in high demand, particularly with the older clientele. Keeping up with the ubiquitous use of technology, senior citizens are often the proud owners of a personal laptop, cell phone, printer, and an array of other electronic devices.

However, they are often confused about how to set up networks, sync their devices, and even operate some of the equipment they own. Internet Technology support services readily answer the needs of these seniors and everyone else who may be unfamiliar with tech equipment. You could start a mobile tech support company that conveniently makes house calls.

A venture like this requires minimal start-up fees as the bulk of the capital will come from your own intellect and know-how. In addition to a very small amount of overhead; IT-skilled individuals will require a vehicle, cash flow for advertising, and the relevant skills to help a customer base with a variety of different needs.

11. Virtual Assistant Services

The concept of virtual assistant services as an online business has risen in popularity in recent years due to a robust economy and evolving technological times.

Presently, executives, managers, and even entrepreneurs employ virtual personal assistant services to cut down their workload affordably and effectively. Far more affordable than taking on a new full-time employee to help with tasks, virtual personal assistants are effectively temporary employees who help relieve the burden of overworked professionals.

Virtual assistants enjoy plenty of autonomy within their professions and can choose their clients, create their own schedules, and work the hours that they desire.

Job duties often include, but are not limited to, managing overloaded emails, scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, and completing an array of tasks to help their clients run their businesses as smoothly as possible.

Becoming a virtual assistant is extremely affordable and requires just a laptop, internet connection, and the ability to successfully complete all tasks you are given.

You can find most listings on freelance websites such as UpworkPeople per Hour or even Craigslist. You could also approach high-ranking corporate executives directly through professional websites like LinkedIn.

12. Graphic Design

Are you exceptionally skilled at software such as IndesignIllustrator, and Photoshop? If the answer is yes, then you are an in-demand individual who can go into business serving a broad base of clientele including individual business owners, groups, charities, and corporations.

While our population has grown by leaps and bounds regarding familiarity with personal technology, graphic design software has, for the most part, remained little understood by many.

The importance of graphic design can be found all throughout the world. From print advertising to the editing of photographs, the very means in which our populace consumes visual imagery is almost always related to the field of graphic design.

The overall unfamiliarity with the field has resulted in an industry that is filled with consultants, advisors, and assistants offering skilled knowledge in graphic design to produce exceptionally crafted visuals for small and large businesses.

Businesses employ individuals knowledgeable in graphic design in a full-time employee capacity or often as independent consultants.

Despite the role they take on within the company, those skilled at graphic design can be tasked with many crucial projects such as creating advertising and marketing materials featuring the logo and various information, as well as creating pamphlets and designing a company’s website.

Ultimately tasked with creating and promoting a polished, slick image for the company online and in print, graphic designers have become vastly essential employees within businesses of all kinds. This is also a best business ideas from my best business ideas list.

13. Social Media Management

Social media managers are a relatively new occupation that has experienced incredible growth over the last part of the decade. The immense post-millennial population that exists today in our country were essentially raised on social media. Keywords such as Myspace, Facebook, and Yahoo readily became part of a child’s lexicon at exceedingly early ages.

As those millennials have grown into teenagers and young adults, they have effectively joined the consumer base of the economy. Millennial consumers expect the businesses they deal with to not only have a robust social media presence but also to be able to partake in any customer service issues via a readily responsive social media avenue.

As a result, the use of social media among small-, medium-, and large-scale companies has veritably exploded in recent years. The employment of social media managers has become commonplace, with businesses actively seeking out individuals who are highly adept at various social media avenues and are able to facilitate and organize consumer communications in those avenues.

Social media managers command a relatively generous salary and can work comfortable hours doing what they enjoy. Crafting a job as a social media manager is as easy as being highly fluent in Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and LinkedIn, possessing a high degree of organizational management, and additionally having the ability to produce results on a fast basis.

14. Advertising Management

The online business environment is highly competitive. With most readers and potential customers having a 3-second attention span, not only do businesses have to create attractive and useful content, but they also need to find ways to drive traffic to their platforms. More often than not, this requires paid ads from substantial search engines such as Google and platforms like Facebook.

But just because a business can pay for ads does not mean that they will get value for their money. That is why they often need to turn to a professional who knows how to manage and drive the most useful kind of paid traffic to their websites. Understanding things like:

  • The impact of retargeting
  • Custom audience definitions
  • Ebb and flow within a sales funnel

All of this can be confusing and quite frankly frustrating to an entrepreneur who still has to worry about things like product development, taxes, and overheads. You could help take this load off their plate — especially if you specialize.

If you understand and know all there is to know about paid advertising, you could start your own ad management company online and sell your services to the many websites and companies online that need it. The truth is, this is something that you can take the time to learn and really should.

Ads are the life force that runs through all these mega companies such as Google and Facebook. They are not going anywhere any time soon. As things stand, more and more companies will be opting to pay for traffic to their websites through ads. They will need someone who knows how to manage all that and provide them with value for money.

Just to show you how big this market is poised to be, research by eMarketer shows that online advertising will grow by double digits through to 2021. It will leap from $83 billion to about $129.23 billion by 2021. Online advertising has already surpassed TV advertising with an approximate gap of a whopping $10 billion. There is money to be made here if you have the skills.

15. Professional Webinar Business

Webinars present online marketers with a platform to interact and engage with an audience that is more than willing to purchase whatever it is they are selling. While creating a webinar business might sound like a fool’s errand to many, before you dismiss it, you should keep this in mind. Jason Fladlien, one of the most successful webinar hosts and co-founder of Rapid Crush, has made well over $100 million selling things on his webinars alone.

The truth is, with the right kind of product, the right kind of audience, and the right kind of medium, you can make a financial killing online today. That is exactly what you need to do if you want to start and run a successful webinar business:

  • Find the right product
  • Show people why they need that product
  • Present it to them in an engaging manner through a well hosted and reliable webinar
  • Cash in on your hard work

The best thing about it is that you do not even have to own the product. You can run your entire affiliate marketing business through webinars. If this sounds like something you might want to do, some of the best and most reliable webinar platforms in the world include WebinarJam and GoToWebinar and will help get you started on the right foot.

16. Self-Publishing eBooks

Writing a book is no longer as long-winded, boring, and difficult as it was in the past. Today, you do not have to deal with a multitude of publishing agents with stringent barriers to entry and almost no advances to offer you. If you have a flair for writing and would love to publish your own ebooks online, you can easily do so through Amazon.

While writing a book might not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are guides and lots of advice online that can help you get started. In fact, you don’t even have to write the book yourself. You can simply hire a ghostwriter to do it for you! It is actually not the writing itself that is the problem (although you have to provide people with something that they would enjoy reading and gain from in general) but in the promotion of the book. It is the marketing aspect of it that often gets most self-publishers out of the money.

Secret tip: If you can thoroughly promote your book before launching it so that it makes a few hundred sales within the first week of its launch, Amazon will take over and start pushing it to its customers. That will exponentially increase the amount of interest, traffic, and sales you get.

Here are some things that you can do to ensure that you make the most out of your self-published book/s:

  • Have it reviewed by someone who has an audience of book lovers (kind of like what Oprah’s Book Club does)
  • Stick to Amazon Standards when it comes to formatting the book
  • Create a website dedicated to promoting the book and your writing prowess
  • Price it accordingly ($0.99 – $5 is a good range considering all you will be selling will be PDF copies as opposed to hardcover copies that require shipping and storage)

Make the book as attractive and interesting enough to your target niche as you can and promote it wildly online. Once you host it on a popular platform like Amazon, you will have a potential source of income for as long as your book is online. By self-publishing several books, you could easily make a good amount of passive income every month.

17. Become a YouTuber

Don’t worry, even if you are camera shy you can still make money from hosting videos on YouTube. Video is quickly becoming an integral part of online interaction and content dissemination. From trends like Facebook Live to Instagram Videos and Snapchat Stories, using video is extremely easy and very likely to earn you an audience – provided you give them what they want.

Here are a few tips on how to earn with YouTube :

  • Promote affiliate products through video on YouTube (you can do this by making videos on how best to use a certain product)
  • Create a web TV series or podcast on a popular subject
  • You can become a YouTube personality like PewDiePie and earn millions in merchandising, views, and public appearances
  • Monetize your videos by joining the YouTube partner program
  • Give tutorials on a subject you love or are an expert in like makeup application

Once you have found your niche and have flooded your channel with awesome videos of high content value and quality, the only thing left is to start promoting that channel and those videos. It is approximated that 1,000 views can earn you up to $4. Now imagine if any one of your videos gets hundreds of thousands or even millions of views! This is also a best business ideas from my best business ideas list.

18. Monetize Your Hobbies

If you haven’t been struck with inspiration by the ideas above, consider taking an in-depth look at your own personal set of hobbies, interests, skills, and passions.

Aside from your own expertise and specific skill set, consider how you can help people improve or change their lives, how you can help them further their careers and become more hireable, or even how you can teach others in the most unique and rare of subjects.

Entrepreneurs have created businesses based on everything from:

  • Dog grooming
  • Calligraphy
  • Craft beer brewing
  • A love for video games
  • Pinball prowess

The options are endless and even lead to things like “how to eat chili peppers safely.”

Video gamers such as Zhang “Mu” Pang have won a total of $1,193,811.11 from 37 tournaments while people like PewDiePie make over $12 Million a year filming themselves playing video games on YouTube.

The point is: if you know how to do something – anything – and you know how to do it well, you have a small business enterprise waiting for you to explore!

Final Thoughts…

While those listed here are some of the best business ideas in the current market environment, finding one that suits you really depends on your interests and who you are as a person.

The trick is to find something that has a readily available market, create a product for that market, and convince them why they need to buy from you. If you can do that, then you sir/madam, are well on your way to being a self-made entrepreneur!

Tips to Create Engaging And Viral Videos!

So can you guarantee that the video you upload will go viral? Well, you can’t – since there is no winning formula to use here.

But what you can do is follow some of these “Tips to Create a Viral YouTube Videos” to give yourself a good chance!

Tip no 1: Don’t Engage In Mindless Promotions

Focusing too much on features, pricing and benefits of a product or service is a strict no-no. Creating brand awareness should be your first priority and not jumping to the sale directly.

Tip no 2: Try to Tell a Story

Ever thought about why the most popular ads on the telly always try to weave a story around the product? That’s because of our sensory cortex – which is said to light up whenever we hear a story. It also helps people to relate to your brand and keep them coming back for more.

Tip no 3: Evoke some Emotions

Happy, sad, motivated or flabbergasted – emotions have the power to keep people engaged all the way through. If you can manage to do this, they will be hooked and get more people to watch it too.

Tip no 4: Do the Unexpected

The whole point of a viral video is to get people talking about it, so don’t hesitate to move out of your comfort zones at times. Feedback will not always be positive but as long as you’re getting lots of it – you’re doing it right.

3. Upload videos in your YouTube channel

It’s quite simple, really. Just log on to YouTube and click the upload (arrow) button on the upper right-hand corner of the page which will take you directly to the Upload page.

Do remember to set the privacy level before uploading your video on YouTube. You can choose from:

  • Public – Anyone can see your video.
  • Unlisted – Only people who have a link to your video will be able to view it.
  • Private – It can be seen by you and the users you select to watch the video.
  • Scheduled – It can only be viewed at the specific date and time set by you.

Once you have chosen your level of privacy, click on the arrow button again to select the video you wish to upload.

Alternately you can just drag and drop the file directly. You can track the video being uploaded to the status bar provided.

Post the upload the video has to process – which can also be viewed in the status bar.

Useful Tip: HD videos (1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720) convey a very professional message to viewers and are hence best suited for upload on YouTube.

Tips to Write Title, Tags and Descriptions

Your TITLE is by far the BIGGEST CHERRY ON THE CAKE! – which in this case is your video.

Its title has to be catchy and relevant to what potential viewers might be searching for. It also matters makes a massive difference in terms of your ranking on the search results page.

Vague and convoluted titles rarely get any traction and consequently defeat their very purpose.

Tags and Descriptions are also an essential ally of your videos. The inclusion of keywords and a relevant description can help ensure your video is ranked a lot higher on Google’s search results.

Once done you can now redirect to the channel’s dedicated page to access the settings, audio, annotations, closed captions and enhancements.

It also allows you to view the video analytics or access the channel video manager. With its own unique URL, your video is now ready for viewers who are free to LIKE, COMMENT and/or SHARE it with others.

4. Apply for YouTube Partnership Program

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) enables video creators to earn money from their content posted on the channel.

This is usually via advertisements seen on their content and from YouTube premium subscribers who watch their videos.

You can apply to join the YouTube Partner program directly from your individual account in the creator studio. On January 16, 2018, Google announced new eligibility requirements for its YouTube Partner Program.

Once a channel reaches 4,000 watch hours in the preceding 12 months and has a minimum of 1,000 subscribers it is reviewed to join the program.

How to Apply:

There are 2 possible scenarios for this.

  1. The first involves channels which have already been in YPP, in which case the channel will automatically be reassessed when it qualifies under the new terms.
  2. Channels owners also have the option of checking their monetisation status at Creator Studio/Channel/Monetization.

Those whose channel is yet to gain entry into YPP need to understand the four steps mentioned in their Creator Studio account. Once the channel meets the qualifying criteria, it will be reviewed to join.

5. Promote your YouTube videos

So far so good. Now here is the slightly tricky part. Making sure your video has what it takes to attract viewers is not “child’s play”. It needs a customised promotional strategy and a lot of hard work.

To begin with, you first need to make sure that your video is fully optimized in terms of updated SEO parameters.

Ensure the use of adequate keywords within your meta-description and URL before uploading the video to your landing page.

Once done, you are now ready to share it on your social media platforms to woo an audience.

You can also use tools like hashtags, paid for pre-roll ads (available on YouTube) and post at the most opportune time to maximize the reach.

You can also leverage the reach afforded by social media influencers, forums and bloggers to garner more traction and gain a wider audience.

6. Start Online Earning From YouTube?

Despite the several success stories, doubts still persist with regard to YouTube monetization and its online earning potential for a regular YouTuber.

Many people appear confused between –

How much money do YouTubers make??  and….How much does YouTube Pay per view?

Well, there’s no point in entering any business if you don’t have a clue about its exact earning potential. Having said that no magic calculator could calculate the money one can earn through YouTube.

At best one can only try to estimate how much YouTube will pay you if you touch 1mn views through the YPP.

So here goes…

According to some estimates, A Pro-Youtuber can earn money from YouTube at an average between USD 3-10 per 100 views – with both CPC and CPI advertisements.

Ergo for a 1mn views, the cumulative earnings from YouTube will be in the region of USD 3,000-10,000 per million views.

One of the easiest and most popular ways to online earning or making money from your YouTube videos is to click on the monetization option for your YouTube account and link your channel with your Google AdSense Account.

By doing so, you stand to earn as much as 55 % of the ad revenue your videos generate. Naturally, YouTube keeps the other 45 %. So at an average, you can make between USD1-2 per 1,000 views of your video.

Online earning from YouTube can vary greatly – depending mainly on your content quality and your ability to market it effectively.
